MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team finished 12th at the 2012 VCU Shootout, Sept. 24. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Hermitage Country Club (Par 72 - 6,955 yards) in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
The Dukes could not find a rhythm on the final day, finishing with a 39-over 327 to post a 54-hole total of 88-over 952. Virginia Tech overcame a seven-shot deficit heading into the final round by shooting a final-round best 3-over 291 for a three-round score of 14-over 878, nine shots better than second-round leader and runner-up Wichita State at 23-over 887. Long Beach State moved up to third at 24-over 888, with Maryland at 27-over 891 and Iowa State at 30-over 894 rounding out the top five schools.
Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) led the Dukes in a tie for 33rd at 14-over 230. Junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) was next in a tie for 54th at 22-over 238. Senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) finished 63rd at 27-over 243, one shot better than senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) in 64th at 28-over 244. Freshman Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) was the final Duke in 67th at 32-over 250.
Maryland's Sean Bosdosh held onto his 36-hole lead and finished as the medalist at 4-under 212 after a final round 1-under 71. He was two shots clear of Scott Fernandez of Iowa State and Long Beach State's Raymond Ho, who tied for runner-up honors at 2-under 214, as those three were the only golfers under par for the tournament.
Madison will quickly return to tournament competition Sat.-Sun., Sept. 29-30 as the Dukes compete in the Patriot Intercollegiate, hosted by George Mason, at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
