HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison's Justin Thorpe, Brian Barlow, Earl Watford, Jakarie Jackson, Stephon Robertson and Tyler Snow have been selected by their teammates as captains for the 2012 football season. Thorpe (Richmond, Va./Varina) has played 21 games at quarterback in his career, where he has posted a 12-5 mark as a starter. Last season, he went 72-for-122 through the air for 858 yards and five touchdowns, while carrying the ball 107 times for 385 yards and one score. He had a career-high 93 yards rushing on 28 carries while going 9-for-16 for 149 yards through the air on a windy day in the NCAA playoff win at Eastern Kentucky. He also was 21-for-38 for 182 yards, all career highs, and one touchdown and one interception while also catching a 35-yard touchdown pass in the NCAA Second Round game at North Dakota State.
A Preseason All-CAA pick this year, Barlow (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) was a Second Team All-CAA selection at H-Back this past season after leading JMU in receptions with 33 catches for 316 yards and a touchdown. He had five catches for 31 yards in the season opener at North Carolina. He later recorded a career-high eight receptions for 79 yards, including a season-long reception of 30 yards, at Old Dominion. He also had four receptions for 34 yards in the NCAA Second Round at North Dakota State.
A First Team All-CAA pick on the offensive line in 2011 and a 2012 Sports Network Preseason FirstTeam All-American, Watford (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) started all 13 games for the Dukes, helping propel the squad into the NCAA Division I Playoffs for the first time in three years. The redshirt senior helped the Dukes average 222.5 yards per game rushing, which ranked 12th nationally, and 4.7 yards per carry.
Jackson (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) has played in 33 of 35 possible career games at safety, getting the starting nod in 26. He recorded a career-best 65 tackles in 2010, including 37 solos, while following it up with 49 tackles, two interceptions and a pass breakup in 2011. He has a career best of 10 tackles at William and Mary in 2009 and against New Hampshire in 2010. Last season head a season-high nine tackles, including seven solo stops, and an interception at New Hampshire.
A redshirt junior, Robertson (Alexandria, Va./Edison) is a Preseason All-CAA pick this year after coming off a season in which he was selected First Team All-CAA and Roanoke Times First Team Division I All-State. He led the Dukes and ranked10th in the CAA with 113 tackles, including 61 solo tackles, 9.0 tackles for a loss and two sacks. Selected as a 2012 Sports Network Preseason Third Team All-American, he added one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and nine passes defended, while recording seven or more tackles in 10 of 13 games, with 10 or more six times.
Robertson registered a career-high 14 tackles, including two for a loss, in the home opener against Central Connecticut State. He was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week after recording six tackles, one tackle for a loss, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in win at William & Mary. He also tallied 11 total tackles with 0.5 tackle for loss and one pass breakup in the NCAA Second Round at North Dakota State.
Snow (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) has played in 25 career games with 22 starts at defensive end, including the last 14. Last season, he recorded 46 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 4.0 sacks and a pass breakup. He had a career-high seven tackles in the 2010 win at Virginia Tech, while posting a season-high six tackles and a sack in the win over Villanova. He also had three tackles, with 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks along with a pair of quarterback hurries at North Dakota State in the NCAA Second Round.
JMU opened its 2012 season with a 55-7 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) last weekend and will host Alcorn State at Bridgeforth Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
