NORFOLK, Va., April 7, 2013 – The James Madison women's tennis squad fell 5-2 at Old Dominion in their final match as conference opponents. The Dukes dropped to 1-3 in Colonial Athletic Association contests and 8-6 overall while the Monarchs stretched their win streak to three and improved to 12-7 overall, including 3-1 in CAA play.
ODU won the doubles point 2-0 with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Once the Monarchs clinched the point, the No. 1 doubles match went unfinished and the teams moved straight into singles competition. JMU compiled wins in two of six duals, collecting points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
Junior Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora Colo./Cherokee Trail) defeated Nikol Hristova 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position and collected her seventh win of the spring. She holds a 2-2 record against league opponents and sits at 7-6 overall, all played at No. 2 singles.
Senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) took down Juliana Pires 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. She snapped a two-match losing streak to tally her 10th win of her senior spring. Overall, she boasts a 10-3 record and is 2-1 against CAA foes.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson) took a 1-0 lead over Melissa Esnal Olguin with a 6-2 win in set one, but dropped set two 6-2. The decisive third set came down to a tiebreaker which Olguin won to take the point.
JMU heads into the final week of the regular season with sights set on Radford, the final non-conference opponent on the 2013 slate. The Dukes battle the Highlanders on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:30 p.m.
