Harrisonburg, Va, Sept. 6, 2013 – Junior Katie Hyland's first goal of the season proved to be the difference as the James Madison women's soccer team topped visiting Villanova 3-2 on Friday night at University Park.
The Dukes (3-2-0) took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to goals by freshman Ashley Herndon and sophomore Rachel Ivey.
Herndon's second goal of the season gave JMU a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the game. Senior Becky Sparks set up the goal with a pass to Herndon, who dribbled into the right side of the box, finishing to the left corner.
It appeared the score would remain 1-0 going into halftime, but the Dukes struck again with just six seconds left on the clock. Hyland's cross set up Ivey for her first career goal to give the Dukes a 2-0 lead.
That goal proved to be crucial as Villanova looked like a different team in the second half, scoring twice to tie the game.
Freshman Kate Martin put the Wildcats on the board with a goal in the 55th minute. The freshman has now scored a goal in four straight games. She factored in on the second goal, as well, setting up Reanna Marino for the game-tying goal in the 74th minute.
JMU wasted little time in responding to Villanova's run, as Hyland's goal came less than three minutes later. Senior Lauren Wilson set up the game-winner with a nice cross.
Ellen Forrest notched her third win of the season in goal for the Dukes, stopping two shots. Jami Kranich made four saves and took the loss.
JMU will host Virginia Tech on Sunday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast online free of charge by MadiZONE HD Sportsnet presented by the JMU Alumni Association.
