POWELLS POINT, North Carolina – The James Madison men's golf team put together another complete round and captured the team title at the 2014 Old Dominion/Outerbanks Golf Invitational, Oct. 19-21. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Old Dominion University was played at Kilmarlic Golf Course (Par 71 – 6,535 yards) in Powells Point, North Carolina.
JMU entered the final round with a slim three-shot advantage over Hartford and five shots over George Mason. Madison was the only team under par in the final round with a 1-under 283 to finish at 6-over 858, four shots ahead of runner-up Hartford. Maryland was third at 17-over 869, with Campbell in fourth at 21-over 873. Host Old Dominion rounded out the top five teams at 22-over 874.
"It was great to watch the guys play well this week," Head Coach Jeff Forbes said. "We had a very average day on Sunday and ended up only a few shots back of the lead. The guys really turned it on Monday and Tuesday, shooting under par both days. For such a young team, the guys held it together after a rough start and finished really strong today. This win is the perfect way to finish the fall season." Sophomore Ryan Cole tied for second in the tournament. Sophomore Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) tied for runner-up honors, his best finish in a college event, after a final-round even-par 71 put him at 2-under 211 for the tournament, tying with Maryland's Ben Wamquist. The pair finished six shots back of Campbell's Gaston Bertinotti, who shot a final round 3-under 68 and completed the 54 holes at 8-under 205. It was Cole's second top-10 finish of the fall and seventh top-15 of at JMU, while he also posted his lowest 54-hole total in his college career.
Sophomore Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) tied for 14th with teammate freshman Jack Floydd (West Sussex, England/Ardingly College) at 4-over 217. Pattaropong had a 2-over 73 in the final round, while Floydd had a team-best final round with a 2-under 69, his low of the fall. Senior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) shot a 1-under 70 in the last round, his second straight under-par round, and tied for 22nd at 6-over 219, while sophomore Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) tied for 32nd at 9-over 222.
"This was a great finish for Ryan," Forbes continued. "He played solid all three rounds and just came up a little short of his first win. His game and confidence are coming around and I believe he will win his first tournament this spring. Jon also played great the final two days after struggling in the first round."
The tournament completed the Dukes' fall part of the 2014-15 schedule. The team will return to the course Mon.-Tue., March 9-10 for the 2015 Bash at the Beach Invitational. Hosted by Appalachian State, the event will be played at Surf Golf & Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
