RICHMOND, Va. – Two James Madison football players were recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association on Monday for their play during the final weekend of the regular season, as redshirt-junior quarterback Vad Lee(Durham, N.C./Hillside (Georgia Tech)) was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week while freshman cornerback Jimmy Moreland (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) was honored as the Rookie of the Week.
In No. 17 JMU's 59-27 triumph over Elon last Saturday, Lee broke the program's single-game completion percentage record, going 23-for-25 (92 percent) for 257 yards and three touchdowns in less than three quarters of action. He also ran in another score and finished with 28 additional yards on the ground.
Lee extended his single-season passing record as he sits at 3,323 yards through the air heading into the postseason. He has also set new single-season program marks this year in passing touchdowns (29), completions (264), pass attempts (430) and total offense (4,092 yards).
Moreland blocked a punt for the third time in his rookie campaign during the first quarter against Elon. In just his first season as a collegian, he has five total blocks as he has a pair of blocked field goals as well. He also added two tackles and one pass breakup in the 32-point win against the Phoenix.
The Dukes have now racked up 11 CAA weekly awards this season, with Lee and Moreland combining for seven of those laurels. Lee was previously named the league's top offensive player on Nov. 10 and Oct. 27 while Moreland was the top rookie on Oct. 13 and took home the special teams honor on Sept. 8.
JMU opens the 2014 NCAA FCS Football Championship this Saturday at 4 p.m. with a first-round matchup against Big South Conference champion Liberty at Bridgeforth Stadium.
