TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The James Madison University men's golf team slid in the second round but was able to improve in the afternoon to finish seventh at the 2014 Seminole Intercollegiate, March 14-15. Originally scheduled for three days, the tournament, hosted by Florida State University, was altered due to weather to a two-day, 54-hole tournament, being played at Southwood Golf Course (Par 72 – 7,172 yards) in Tallahassee, Fla.
Madison could not put it together in the morning with a 10-over 298, but improved six shots in the afternoon with the second-best round of the final 18, shooting a 4-over 292 to finish at 13-over 877. No. 34 Mercer led from start to finish, including tying for the tournament best with a 9-under 279 in the morning, and finished at 8-under 856. Host No. 12 Florida State and No. 29 South Florida tied for runner-up honors at 2-under 862, with North Carolina in fourth at 8-over 872. Troy and Mississippi State tied for fifth at 9-over 873, four shots ahead of the Dukes.
Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) and juniors Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) and Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tied for top JMU honors with each posting a 3-over 219, tying for 21st. Smith was the most consistent in the tournament, going 73-74-72, while Cole had the second-best round of the tournament with his final round 1-under 71. Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) finished three shots back of his teammates at 6-over 222 to tie for 30th, while sophomore Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) rounded out the team scoring at 23-over 239 in 72nd. Playing as an individual, senior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) tied for 60th at 19-over 233.
South Florida's Trey Valentine took home medalist honors at 6-under 210, including a final-round 4-under 68. Mercer's Hans Reimers was second one shot back at 5-under 211, while five players tied for third at 3-under 213.
The Dukes will return to the course next weekend, playing at the Middleburg Bank Men's Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort's River Course in Williamsburg, Va.
