Men's Tennis Shuts Out Howard, 7-0

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 6, 2014 – James Madison posted its first shutout of the season with a 7-0 win at Howard in non-conference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon.

The Dukes are 7-10 with two matches remaining on the schedule before the CAA Championships. The Bison dropped to 2-13.

Freshman Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) ran his winning streak to three matches with the lone three-set victory of the day for the Dukes. He struggled in his first set with a 6-4 loss to Laguna Foster at No. 4 singles, but dominated the final two sets with back-to-back 6-0 shutouts. He improved to 13-18 overall and 7-10 in dual matches.

Freshman Miljan Ruzic (Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) had the most dominant win of the day as he posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Nico Sorrell at No. 5 singles. He was perfect on the day as he also teamed with sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) for an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles. They improved to 11-10 overall and 6-7 in dual matches.

Sophomore Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) evened his overall record at 15-15 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Myron Davis at No. 3 singles. Freshman Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) is nearing the .500 mark as he upped his record to 14-15 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Ismael Kaouache at No. 2 singles.

Stirling and freshman Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) rounded out JMU's individual winners. Stirling was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over William Jones in the first spot, while Kathol topped Nile Kendall 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth slot.

The Dukes swept the three doubles matches. Branth and Salinas picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 2, while freshman Alex Berdnikoff (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School for Athletes) and Moorhead posted an 8-2 win at No. 3.

JMU will play its final away match of the season when it travels to take on Radford on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
