MANAKIN SABOT, Virginia – The James Madison men's golf team slid two places in the final 18 and finished eighth at the 2014 Janney VCU Shootout, Sept. 22-23. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Hermitage Country Club (Par 72 – 6,955 yards) in Manakin Sabot, Virginia.  Sitting in sixth after the first two rounds, JMU shot an 11-over 299 in the final 18 and finished eighth at 29-over 893. Virginia Tech became the first three-time team champion of the event, finishing at 1-over 865, six shots ahead of runner-up Iowa State at 7-over 871. Maryland was third at 8-over 872, with Radford in fourth at 18-over 882 and host VCU finishing fifth at 20-over 884.  Sophomore Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) was the top finisher for the Dukes in a tie for seventh at 2-over 218 following a final round 1-over 73. For Cole, it was his sixth top-15 finish of his career. Senior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter) also finished in the top 20, tying for 16th at 5-over 221, his eighth top-25 placing at JMU. Redshirt-sophomore Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) tied for 32nd at 10-over 226 following a final round 1-over 73. Sophomore Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) tied for 51st at 15-over 231, with junior Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) finishing 83rd at 29-over 245. Playing as an individual, redshirt-sophomore Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) tied for 81st at 28-over 244.  Iowa State's Nick Voke led from start to finish, earning medalist honors at 3-under 213 by one shot over Maclain Huge of Virginia Tech at 2-under 214 and two shots better than Maryland's Connor Tendall and Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone at 1-under 215.  Madison is back on the course quickly, traveling to Lorton, Virginia for the 2014 Patriot Collegiate, Mon.-Wed., Sept. 27-29. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by George Mason University, will be played at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
