Dukes Drop 7-0 Decision at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison dropped a 7-0 decision at Liberty on Friday afternoon and fell to 1-3 (1-0 CAA) on the spring season. The match was the first on Liberty's spring slate.

The Dukes started the day off a with 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by freshman Stephen Goldman (Lutz, Fla./Gaither) and sophomore Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) over David Bush and Sam Matheson.

The Flames, however, rattled off consecutive 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the doubles point. Junior-sophomore duo Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) and Miljan Ruzic (Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) lost to Dillon Segur and Egon Samaai at No. 1 doubles while the sophomore junior tandem of Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) and Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) fell at No. 2 doubles.

Liberty swept singles action, beginning with a 6-2, 6-4 win by Segur over Stirling at the No. 1 position. Salinas dropped his No. 2 singles match against Matheson in straight 6-3 sets while Moorhead fell 6-0, 6-2 to Azuero at No. 4 singles as Liberty claimed the decisive fourth point of the match.

Branth battled Samaai at No. 3, coming up just short in set one (7-6 (7-4)) and was unable to overcome in set two, falling 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Goldman lost in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to Castano. Sophomore Alex Berdnikoff (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School for Athletes) followed with a two-set loss (7-5, 6-2) to Jason Burgess at No. 6 singles.

JMU heads to back to the Sports Racket in Lynchburg, Va., on Saturday with a 10 a.m. neutral-court match against Morehead State.
