NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored three goals in a seven-minute span early in the second half to pull away from James Madison for a 4-0 Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer result at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium on a rainy Wednesday night.
The Dukes (3-9-4, 2-3-2 CAA) kept things close from a statistical standpoint, taking 18 shots compared to Delaware's 16. The Blue Hens (8-6-3, 4-2-1 CAA) made the most of their opportunities, however, placing four of eight shots on goal into the net.
The scoring opened in the 17th minute on reigning CAA Player of the Year Guillermo Delgado's seventh goal of the season. The junior received a through ball from Thomas Villardi in the 18-yard box and placed a shot past JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper
Kyle Morton for the goal.
Delaware then added to its lead with three goals in quick succession, all coming between the 51st minute and 58th minutes. Ben Sampson, Nick DiRienzo and Delgado accounted for each of the three goals.
Sophomore forward
Joe Vyner led the Dukes' attack with three shots in 69 minutes of action, including one on goal.
James Madison returns to the field when it hosts the CAA-leading Hofstra Pride on Saturday, Oct. 31 at University Park at 7 p.m.
NOTEWORTHYDelaware starting goalkeeper Todd Morton is the younger brother of JMU's
Kyle Morton. The siblings combined for six saves on the night.
WHAT IT MEANSWednesday's loss means that JMU's chances of qualifying for the CAA Championship will come down to the Hofstra home finale. Currently sitting in sixth, the Dukes will need a win or tie against the Pride or losses by both Northeastern and William & Mary to secure a spot in the CAA Tournament.
COACH'S QUOTE"Tonight was tough for us, but Delaware is a very good team," said head coach
Tom Foley. "We have one more game left in the regular season and we'll do what we can to come away with a positive result."
LOOKING AHEADIn the all-time series between JMU and Hofstra, the Pride hold a 10-7-1 lead. The two teams met in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals last season and the Dukes came away with a 2-0 victory en route to winning the CAA title. Hofstra has already clinched the top seed and hosting privileges for the 2015 tournament.
