RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt senior quarterback Vad Lee cemented his place as the top player in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the second consecutive season as the James Madison signal caller was voted the 2015 Dudley Award winner on Wednesday night at the Dudley/Lanier awards banquet at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump.
Lee became the first collegiate player in the 26-year history of the award to win it in back-to-back seasons and only the second player to win the award twice, joining Virginia Tech running back Lee Suggs (2000, 2002).
"It's a beautiful honor, to God be the glory," Lee said. "I'm so thankful just to be at James Madison with a great community, great teammates and great coaches. I'm truly honored and blessed and I can't say that enough because I'm almost living a dream right now. From a guy being hurt to seeing how God can use being injured for good, I'm so thankful JMU impacted me and I was able to impact people through football."
Lee won the award after tallying 29 points and seven first-place votes. William & Mary free safety DeAndre Houston-Carson was runner up with 16 points and three first-place votes while Richmond running back Jacobi Green was third with 14 points and a pair of first-place votes.
The Durham, N.C. native was named Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year two weeks ago, marking the third time in the team history that Madison produced the league's top offensive weapon.
He was one of the nation's top offensive players this season, ranking first in total offense (375.5) and completion percentage (68.3%), third in point responsibility (21.8) and fifth rush yards per carry (7.5). He also led the CAA in passing touchdowns (21) and yards per play (8.6).
A three-time CAA Player of the Week, he passed for 2,190 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 814 yards and eight scores to finish his senior campaign with 3,004 total yards of offense and 29 total touchdowns. In just 21 career games at JMU, Lee tied the program's passing touchdown record (51) while ranking second in total offense (7,292), third in passing yards (5,652) and completions (446) and fifth in pass attempts (705). He became the only player in Division I history (FBS and FCS) to pass and rush for 275 yards in the same game when he threw for 289 yards and ran for 276 more in JMU's 48-45 win at FBS foe SMU on Sept. 26.
Lee's season was cut short following a foot injury that would sideline him for the team's final four games.
JMU has now produced the Dudley Award winner three straight years after Stephon Robertson won it in 2013 and the fourth time ever with Rodney Landers garnering the accolade in 2008. CAA Football has also won the Dudley four straight years as Old Dominion's Taylor Heinicke won the 2012 award.
About the Dudley Award: The Dudley Award is named after Bill Dudley, who was a standout at the University of Virginia and with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
