JMU Downs St. Bonaventure 6-1 in Neutral-Court Match

BLACKSBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis used a perfect showing in doubles and five singles victories to down St. Bonaventure 6-1 on Sunday in a neutral-court match at Virginia Tech.

JMU moved to 4-6 in dual action, snapping a two-match losing-streak. St. Bonaventure fell to 2-9 overall this spring.

The Dukes swept the Bonnies 3-0 in doubles play, beginning with an 8-1 victory by sophomores Miljan Ruzic and Sebastian Salinas over Hector Martinez and Victor Blanco at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Maxi Branth and Robert Stirling clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Carlos de La Cruz and Andrew Blair at No. 2 doubles before sophomores Alex Berdnikoff and Brett Moorhead clinched the sweep with an 8-2 win over Trevor Haskill and TJ DeSanto.

Salinas carried the momentum into singles action with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Blanco at the No. 2 position. The Dukes moved to a 3-0 lead when Branth defeated de La Cruz in straight 6-1 sets at No. 4 singles.

St. Bonaventure cut into the JMU advantage with a 6-4, 6-0 win by Martinez over Ruzic at No. 3 singles.

Match point came at No. 6 singles as freshman Stephan Goldman dropped Jacob Mishkin in two sets (6-3, 7-5). Moorhead followed with a two-set win (6-1, 6-3) over Haskill at No. 5 singles.

Stirling rounded out the JMU scoring with a come-from-behind victory (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) at No. 1 singles over Blair.

The Dukes open their home slate on March 5 as they host Longwood in a 2 p.m. match at Hillside Courts.
