JMU, Drexel Match Called at 3-3 Due to Darkness

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – James Madison women's tennis and Drexel battled to a 3-3 stalemate on Sunday as the match was called due to darkness before the No. 5 singles match could be completed.

The Dragons earned the first point of the day after a 2-1 showing in doubles, but the Dukes squared the match by taking three of the five completed singles matches. At No. 5 singles, sophomore Rebecca Harris was locked in a tight match with Ryshena Providence that was called in the third set (6-7(3), 7-6(2), 2-4) when the sun went down.

"Today, Mother Nature didn't let us finish off the match," Head Coach James Bryce said. "It's unfortunate, but the team fought hard and it was a great battle. We will take a couple of days off and prepare for next weekend."

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, JMU tied the match at 1-all following a two-set win (6-0, 6-2) by freshman Kimmy Herrock over Kendra Bunch at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Rachel Nelson followed with a two-set win (6-4, 7-5) over Erin Bowsher at No. 2 singles to give the Dukes their only lead of the day.

Drexel countered with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles as Clary Rodriguez defeated freshman Dylan Owens. The Dragons took their second lead of the day at 3-2 with a three-set victory (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) at No. 1 singles, secured by Nicole Pivonka over senior Taylor Pinchoff.

Sophomore Alex Huie knotted the match at 3-all when she picked up a three-set win (7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3) over Lea Winkler at No. 4 singles.

The Dukes sit at 9-6 (2-2 CAA) this spring while the Dragons are 12-1 (0-0 CAA).

JMU returns home for its next match when Hampton visits Hillside Courts on April 3 at 2 p.m.
