MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – James Madison men's soccer team fell 6-2 to the West Virginia Mountaineers at Dick Dlesk Stadium on Friday night.
Looking to collect a ball in the box, senior goalkeeper
Kyle Morton collided with a WVU forward and was issued a red card as a result in the second minute of play. Senior
Andres Neira was called upon to try to stop the ensuing penalty kick, but was unable to do so as Jad Arslan put the Mountaineers up 1-0.
West Virginia then doubled their lead a minute later when Ryan Cain made a run down the right side and put the ball in the roof of the net.
After taking a career-high four shots in Tuesday night's match against Penn State, senior forward
Eric Schmidt gave the Dukes a header goal in the 11th minute for his first of the season. West Virginia's Ryan Cain answered quickly, however, scoring his second of the night in the 12th minute.
From there, the Mountaineers extended their lead in the 39th and 56th minutes to bring the game to 5-1 before
Billy Metzler got one back for JMU with a goal in the 76th minute.
Senior SpotlightSenior goalkeeper
Andres Neira made the first appearance of his collegiate career when he came on for Morton in the first half.
NoteworthySchmidt's goal tonight for the Dukes was his first of the season. The senior scored one goal in each of his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons and will look to buck the trend with at least 13 more games left in 2015.
Coach's Quote"I'm extremely proud of the guys tonight," said head coach
Tom Foley. "To play hard a man down for 89 minutes takes a lot of courage and heart and I'm proud of our guys for doing that tonight."
