JMU Battles Through Second Day of Hokie Fall Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis will compete for four flight titles on Sunday after powering through the second day of the Hokie Fall Invite. Both junior Rachel Nelsonand sophomore Dylan Owenswill compete for two titles tomorrow, and sophomore Kimmy Herrock will challenge for a singles title.
Nelson will take a shot at both the Service Flight Singles championship and the White Flight Doubles championship with Owens. Nelson defeated Penn State's Kelly Mengel 6-1, 6-0 in her semifinal singles match, and joined Owens in a 7-6(9) win over Towson's A.J. Gomer and Sophie Lesage in semifinal doubles action.
Owens won in straight 6-0 sets against Towson's Yergeniya Shusterman in the Duty Flight Singles semifinals to earn her shot at a flight title. This is the second consecutive weekend she has advanced to a singles championship match.
In the Leadership Singles Flight, Herrock defeated Virginia Tech's Katherine Butler in come-from-behind fashion to earn her spot in Sunday's title match. After falling behind 6-3 in set one, she pulled even with a 7-5 win in set two before taking the match victory with a 10-8 set-three showing after being down 7-3 in the tiebreak.
Freshman Emma Petersenearned a three-set victory (6-5(7), 4-6, 13-11) over Emily Struble (Miami OH) in Honor Flight Singles consolation semifinals, taking the tiebreak after trailing 5-9.
The Dukes wrap up their second tournament on Sunday, Sept. 27, with the final rounds of both singles and doubles at the Hokie Fall Invite.
QUOTING COACH BRYCE "Overall, today was a success," Head Coach James Brycesaid. "We didn't quite execute early in doubles, which we will look to improve on tomorrow. Our team fought really hard in singles, which put us in a winning position. Emma and Kimmy were both down big in tiebreakers and won. On our last day, we will have to come out with a lot of energy and intensity to succeed."
