HUNTINGTON, W.Va – James Madison remained unbeaten this season in head-to-head swim meets as it notched a 159-141 victory against Marshall on Thursday at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium. The meet was rescheduled from Jan. 23 to beat the winter storm.
The Dukes improved to 7-0 in duals this year, while the Thundering Herd dropped to 7-2.
Senior Kristen Zielinski won two individual events and one relay, claiming both sprint freestyles while being a part of JMU's winning 200 free relay. The Dukes won a total of eight events, including six individual races and both relays.
Sophomores Courtney Clarke and Katie Parker and seniors Cameron Martin and Carli Molano kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.84.
Parker, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association co-Swimmer of the Week, also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.17, and she was followed closely by senior teammate Amanda Presgraves (1:06.40) in second.
Just two events later, Zielinski won her first event of the day, the 50 free, with a time of 24.00 seconds, which was a season best for the senior.
Junior Olivia Lehman and senior Carly Alexander took the top spots in both the 3-meter and the 1-meter diving events, earning a combined 26 points for the Dukes. Lehman took first in both the 3-meter (274.86) and the 1-meter (251.85) while Alexander was runner-up in the 3-meter (233.85) and 1-meter (244.65).
Zielinski recorded her second individual victory, winning the 100 free, which she clocked a season-best time of 51.87.
Maintaining the momentum, the Dukes took the top three spots in the 200 breast, which was won by Presgraves (2:21.46). Parker (2:22.27) and junior Maddy Murphy (2:28.34) placed second and third, respectively.
Zielinski, sophomore Quinn MacMillan, Molano and senior Camilla Czulada closed the meet with the team's final first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.41).
QUOTING HEAD SWIMMING COACH DANE PEDERSEN
"Today was a hard fought win. Marshall was well coached and ready for us. They gave us all we could handle and we came out a little flat, but our girls rallied well. We also got a huge boost from diving with all three divers coming up big on the boards. I'm very proud of how our team responded and am looking forward to going through the championship season with this team."
QUOTING HEAD DIVING COACH BECKY BENSON
"While this wasn't the divers' best meet, it was one that showed the fight they have for their team. They knew they needed to score points to help beat Marshal and they got those points."
NEXT UP
The Dukes divers return to the boards on Jan. 30 when they head to Clemson, S.C., to take on Clemson. The swimmers are back at it Feb. 5-7 at the Carolina College Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
