HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne recently announced the promotion of
Stephen LaPorta to the position of Assistant A.D. for Compliance.
Â
"Stephen has developed a great rapport with our coaches and staff members to ensure that our operating procedures and policies comply with national regulations," Bourne said. "He works hard to ensure that we do things the right way at JMU, and he truly has the best interests of our student-athletes in mind. We are fortunate to have him take on this leadership role in our operation."
Â
In his new role, LaPorta will lead the department's efforts in regards to compliance with NCAA legislation and rules governance while overseeing the compliance staff. He will work with coaches and staff members to provide rules education, ensure student-athlete eligibility and guide the development of departmental policy in accord with NCAA allowances.
Â
"I am extremely excited to start my new position as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at James Madison University," LaPorta said. "Since I began working at JMU six years ago, I have had the privilege of working with great coaches, staff and student-athletes, and I look forward to continuing to do that while leading the athletics compliance office. I would like to thank
Jennifer Phillips and
Jeff Bourne for providing me with the opportunity to continue my career at the university that I love."
Â
LaPorta most recently served as the director of compliance for rules education. He was responsible for creating a comprehensive rules education program for staff, student-athletes and other university constituents.  He also monitored all awards and benefits given to student-athletes, handled NCAA initial eligibility for the university's 18 Division I athletics programs, oversaw coaching staff limitations and administered the NCAA coaches recruiting certification exam.
Â
Promoted to his current position in July of 2014, LaPorta began working in James Madison's compliance department as an assistant in August 2010 before being promoted to the director role in July of 2014. Before working at JMU, he spent a year as a full-time athletics compliance intern at Virginia Tech.
Â
LaPorta graduated from JMU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in sports and recreation management and a minor in business. He then continued his education at JMU, earning a master's degree in sport and recreation leadership in 2012. LaPorta also received his National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC) Educational Certification in February 2014.
