WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – James Madison senior running back Khalid Abdullah garnered his first-career national award, as he was voted the 2016 American Sports Network FCS Player of the Year, ASN announced on Friday.
Abdullah rushed for 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding two receiving scores during the regular season. He ranked third nationally in both scoring (10.4) and total touchdowns (19) and was fourth in rushing scores and fifth in rushing yards. He led the CAA in yards per carry (6.3) and was second in rushing yards per game (118.2).
The Newport News, Va. native tallied over 100 rushing yards in eight games this season. He was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week after running for a career-high 194 yards and three touchdowns against William & Mary on Oct. 8. Abdullah leads JMU all-time in career rushing touchdowns, at 36. He was a finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award, in which he finished eighth.
Abdullah was one of four finalists for ASN's top FCS player, and earned 52 percent of the fan vote to win the Player of the Year crystal trophy, which he will be presented sometime during the winter.
The other finalists included Sam Houston State quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe (39%), Samford quarterback Devlin Hodges (6%) and Fordham running back Chase Edmonds (3%). The ASN FCS Player of the Year was created in 2015, with Lamar running back Kade Harrington winning the inaugural award.
The fourth-seeded Dukes open postseason play on Saturday, Dec. 3 when they host New Hampshire in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium, and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
