HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison picked up a 57-42 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory behind a game-high 20 points from redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmey on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
Â
The Dukes improved to 18-5, including an 11-1 mark in CAA play, while the Pride fell to 18-6 and 9-4 in league play. It was also the 13th straight win at home dating back to last season, as JMU moved to 11-0 on home court this year.
Â
Hofstra hung close for much of the second half, but a 3-pointer from junior forward Da'Lishia Griffin with 3:35 remaining extended JMU's lead to 49-40. On the ensuing possession, sophomore guard Hailee Barron stole a pass at midcourt, and Gwathmey got an offensive rebound off a JMU miss and put it back for an 11-point advantage.
Â
JMU won the rebounding battle 44-35, led by 16 boards from freshman center Kayla Cooper-Williams, which tied her career high. Senior forward Destiny Jones also contributed seven rebounds. Cooper-Williams also had five of JMU's 10 blocks.
Â
The Dukes forced Hofstra into tough shots and, as a result, the Pride shot just 29.3 percent (17-58) from the floor and 11.1 percent (2-18) from three-point range. JMU limited Hofstra to five points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 17-5 over the final 10 minutes to run away with season series sweep.
Â
Gwathmey's 20-point day was her 14th consecutive double-digit performance and is just seven points shy of being 14th on JMU's all-time scoring list (1,358). Senior guard Angela Mickens rounded out the double-digit scoring with 17 points to go with a game-best five assists.
Â
The Pride was led by Ashunae Durant and Anjie White, who had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
JMU remains home for a pair of contests next weekend, taking on William and Mary on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Towson on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
Â
QUOTING HEAD COACH KENNY BROOKS
"For us to go 4-0 during this stretch, in my opinion, is pretty remarkable. I thought we were a little off tonight, some of our shots that usually go in weren't falling, but give credit to Hofstra. They did a good job of making us stand around and shoot jump shots, but again, I thought we did a really good job."
