HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Career days from redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmey and senior point guard Angela Mickens powered James Madison women's basketball to a 71-54 victory at Hofstra on Friday night. With their eighth straight win, the Dukes are 15-5 overall and 8-1 in Colonial Athletic Association action. Hofstra is 16-5 overall and 7-3 in CAA games.

Gwathmey scored a career-high 34 points, her second performance of 30 points or more this season, and moved into 17th place on the all-time JMU scoring charts at 1,301 career points. She has scored in double figures 11 straight games, including eight consecutive contests with 20 or more points, a record under Head Coach Kenny Brooks. Defensively, she added in a season-high 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Mickens notched a career-high tying 20 points off an 8-of-13 shooting day to round out the double-digit scoring for JMU. She also contributed a game-high eight assists, pushing her career total to 585 dishes. Junior forward Da'Lishia Griffin got in on the assist action with a career-high four of her own, adding to her nine rebounds and seven points over 30 minutes of play.

As a team, the Dukes used a 15-7 lead in offensive rebounds to secure a 17-5 edge in second-chance points. They also converted 12 Hofstra turnovers into 19 points and only allowed the Pride three points off a season-low seven giveaways.

JMU shot 41.5 percent from the floor and held Hofstra to 35.3 percent shooting. The Dukes limited the second-best scoring offense in the league to just 54 total points, well below their average of 66.4 points per game.

The Dukes trailed by three (9-6) in the early goings of the first quarter, but an 8-0 run fueled by six straight points from Mickens put JMU up 14-9 heading into the first media timeout. The two teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter as JMU took a 22-17 lead into the second quarter.

Hofstra, however, scored the first five points of the second frame to tie it at 22-all. Neither team relented, battling to a 26-26 knot, before a 6-0 run gave the Dukes the lead for good as the Pride called a timeout.

Continuing on their road trip, the Dukes now head to Northeastern for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday.
