HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis fell 4-2 to Davidson in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
JMU (8-9) opened with a sweep of doubles action to take a 1-0 lead over Davidson (10-7) into singles action. The Wildcats rattled off two consecutive singles wins to take a 2-1 advantage, but junior Sebastian Salinas battled to a pair of tiebreak victories (7-6(5), 7-6(0)) at No. 1 to knot the match at 2-all. Davidson, however, won the next two singles matches to clinch match point.
Salinas went 2-0 on the day to the lead the Dukes. Coupled with his singles win over Shamael Chaudhry, he teamed up with junior Miljan Ruzic for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Zack Zapatero and Artem Khrapko to cap the Dukes' 3-0 showing in doubles.
Senior Maxi Branth was leading his No. 3 singles match against David Hager 7-5, 5-2 when it was left unfinished after the decisive team point was secured. Earlier in the day, he and Tristan Stittsparked the Dukes' solid doubles showing with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 position over Evan Watkins and Alex Howard.
The clinching doubles victory came courtesy of juniors Alex Berdnikoff and Brett Moorhead at the No. 3 position, a 6-3 decision against Hager and Jack Riazzi in favor of the Dukes.
The Dukes return to action on Wednesday, April 6, at 3 p.m. against Radford at Hillside Courts.
