RICHMOND, Va. - Four members of the James Madison baseball team, the most since the 2013 season, were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association teams on Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the league.
Junior left fielder
Ky Parrott was named First Team All-CAA and senior shortstop
Chad Carroll was selected to the Second Team, while junior first baseman
Brett Johnson and sophomore catcher
Zach Tondi each garnered Third Team All-CAA honors. Senior right-hander
Ben Garner also picked up a spot on the All-Academic team.
"I am very excited for these young men," Head Coach
Marlin Ikenberry said. "These honors are proof of the incredible amount of hard work and dedication that they've put into this season."
Parrott garnered his first career All-CAA honors after a season that saw him break the JMU single-season record for walks. The Herndon, Va. native complimented a .319 batting average with a stellar .496 on-base percentage, the 16th-highest in Division I this season, tacking on four home runs and a team-best four triples. In league play, Parrott's numbers were even better, as he hit .363 with an eye-popping .579 on-base percentage.
Carroll battled through injury in 2016 en route to the third All-CAA nod of his decorated career. Despite missing 11 games with a hand injury, Carroll finished third in the league in batting average (.372) and fourth in stolen bases (22), leading the Dukes in both categories. Entering the CAA Tournament, Carroll is seventh all-time at JMU in games played (207), fifth in at-bats (793), eighth in hits (264) and third in triples (15).
A first-time All-CAA honoree, Johnson made his presence known as one of the league's premier power hitters in 2016 on his way to Third Team honors. Johnson is tied for the team lead in home runs (6) and second amongst Dukes for RBIs (34) and walks (32). The Charlottesville, Va. native is also one of just two JMU players to start 51 games in 2016.
Tondi, who joined the Dukes in 2016 after transferring from Fairleigh Dickinson, did not waste any time making an impact at JMU. The Wood-Ridge, N.J. native hit safely in 21 of his final 23 contests heading into the CAA Tournament, lifting his batting average to a season-high .340, which is second-highest on the team. Tondi is also tied for the team lead in home runs (6), owns the highest slugging percentage (.536) and is third in RBIs (33), despite starting just 35 contests this season.
The four Dukes named to All-CAA teams marks the highest total for JMU since getting four following the 2013 season. This season also represents the fourth year in a row in which a JMU player has been named First Team All-CAA.
Garner was tabbed to the CAA All-Academic Team for the first time in his career after earning a 4.0 GPA this semester and graduating from JMU in May with a degree in kinesiology. The Burke, Va. native was crucial out of the bullpen for the Dukes in 2016, holding opponents to a .185 batting average and picking up eight saves across 20 outings while pitching a 3.25 ERA, the second-lowest mark on the team. His eight saves are currently tied for third-most in a single-season in program history.
Sophomore catcher Nick Feight of UNCW was named the CAA Player of the Year, while Aaron Civale of Northeastern and Ryan Foster of UNCW split CAA Pitcher of the Year plaudits. Northeastern catcher Josh Treff earned CAA Defensive Player of the Year and second baseman Richie Palacios of Towson was named CAA Rookie of the Year. UNCW's Mark Scalf was voted CAA Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career.
The fourth-seeded Dukes open up the CAA Baseball Championship this week with a first-round matchup against fifth-seeded Northeastern at 12 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. JMU took two of three games from the Huskies in Harrisonburg earlier this season.
