HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball (3-1) closed the JMU Invitational by sweeping Holy Cross (1-2) to win the tournament title, but the Dukes suffered their first loss of the season, falling to No. 7 Washington (1-0) in straight sets Saturday night in Godwin Hall.
Washington set the pace in the first set, capitalizing on JMU errors to win, 25-19, but the Dukes stormed back in set two, closing a three-point Husky lead to lock the match at 10-all early. Both teams traded points until a timely kill from sophomore Taylor Gail edged the Dukes to a 22-21 lead before the Huskies tallied three consecutive points to pull ahead, winning the set, 27-25. Washington completed the sweep with a 25-15 victory in set three.

JMU's freshman class led the Dukes to a sweep over Holy Cross (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) Saturday afternoon to close out the JMU Invitational with a 3-0 record, winning the tournament title.
The Dukes were dominant through the first two sets, cruising to two 25-15 set victories. The Dukes tallied five straight points to cap the straight-set victory.
Redshirt freshman Kelly Vahos headed the JMU attack with 12 kills, while Goodman added six to eclipse the 1,200-kill mark for her career. Three true freshmen added multiple kills, led by Briley Brind'Amour's four total. Setter Martin dished out 32 helpers, guiding the team to a .248 attacking percentage. Rounding out the freshman contribution, Sarah Driscoll earned the start at libero and picked up 21 digs over three sets.
SENIOR MILESTONE
Goodman made JMU history during Saturday's contest against Holy Cross, recording her 1,200th career kill. The Powhatan, Va. native became just the sixth Duke in program history to record 1,200 or more kills. Goodman closed the weekend with 1,214 career kills, the seventh-most in program history, and is closing in on Allyson Halls (2004-07), who ranks fifth with 1,305 kills.
"It's one of the most special feelings in the world to leave my mark here at JMU," Goodman said. "I don't want to graduate. I don't think people really understand what it means to be a part of JMU volleyball or a team like this. There is so much love. We're like a big family. I can't take all the credit. I couldn't do what I do without my teammates. I love them so much."
