HARRISONBURG, Va. – Following a record-breaking victory to open the 2016 football season, James Madison maintained its No. 12 ranking in the STATS FCS Top 25, the organization announced Monday.
The Dukes (1-0) broke the program record for points in a game, racking up 11 touchdowns and a field goal to cruise to an 80-7 victory against Morehead State last Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium. It was the largest margin of victory in the 45-year history of the team and was the CAA record for most points against a Division I team.
JMU scored 10 touchdowns via the ground game, a program record, and that total was just one shy of the FCS record, set by Georgia Southern in 2004. The Dukes produced touchdowns on each of their first seven drives and got points on every possession through three quarters to mount a 73-7 lead.
The points record was reset with 11:17 remaining in the fourth quarter when junior running back Taylor Woods, who ran for 89 yards, scored his third touchdown of the night from 14 yards out. Woods' touchdown total was matched by junior quarterback Bryan Schor, as the signal caller ran for a game- and career-high 129 yards.
JMU forced MSU into five turnovers, which later resulted in 28 points off turnovers. Senior safety Raven Greene led the defense with seven tackles while recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass. JMU outgained the Eagles 607-182, which included the Dukes rushing for 498 yards, just three off the school record.
Five CAA squads are ranked in this week's STATS poll. Richmond paced the league at No. 2, followed by JMU (12th), William & Mary (13th), Villanova (22nd) and New Hampshire (24th). Towson, Stony Brook, Albany, Delaware and Maine also received votes.
Additionally, JMU was also ranked 11th in the FCS Coaches Poll, 10th in the Athlon Sports FCS Power Poll and 13th in the HERO Sports Top 25 Media Poll.
The 12th-ranked Dukes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they host Central Connecticut State in a "White Out." The 2016 season is presented by CarMax and this Saturday's matchup is sponsored by University Outpost.
