RICHMOND, Va. – Following a record-breaking 2016 season that saw the Dukes competed in the program's first NCAA Super Regional, James Madison softball was selected as the consensus pick to win the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association title on Thursday.
In a vote by the league's eight head coaches, the Dukes received a first-place vote from every opposing coach in the conference and earned 49 total points in the preseason poll. The 2016 CAA Championship runner-up Towson was selected to finish second, tallying 41 points.
Following the Dukes and Tigers were College of Charleston (32), Hofstra (32), Elon (27), Delaware (19), UNCW (17) and Drexel (7).
James Madison finished 2016 with a 50-6 record, setting school records for most wins and fewest losses in a single season and leading the country with an .893 winning percentage. The Dukes captured the CAA regular-season title for the third consecutive season and won their first CAA Championship since 2014.
Earning a national seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the Dukes won the Harrisonburg Regional before advancing and hosting the program's first NCAA Super Regional. James Madison closed the 2016 season ranked No. 8 in the
USA Today/NFCA Top 25 and No. 7 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls.

Megan Good.
Good was recognized as one of the program's first First-Team NFCA All-Americans after ranking second in the country in wins (32), fourth in ERA (0.94) and hits allowed per seven innings (3.7) and sixth in shutouts (6). The junior also led the conference in complete games (20), innings pitched (215.2) and strikeouts (222). With her dominance in the circle, Good was a Top 10 finalist for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.
Yesterday, Good was selected to
Fastpitch News Preseason NCAA Division I All-American team as a first-team selection. The organization selected student-athletes as part of its preseason All-American First and Second teams as well as awarding Honorable Mention recognitions. Good was one of 15 student-athletes selected as a preseason First Team All-American by the organization.
The Dukes are returning six of nine starters, including senior infielder
Madyson Moran and senior outfielder
Taylor Newton, both all-conference selections last season. JMU also adds 11 true freshmen to the roster this spring, making it one of the younger teams in the country.
James Madison opens the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. when the Dukes face Southeastern Conference powerhouse Missouri in Charleston, S.C. to open the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern.
