WACO, Texas – James Madison had three players honored national by the American Football Coaches Association, as redshirt senior defensive lineman Andrew Ankrah, junior cornerback Rashad Robinson and redshirt senior offensive lineman Aaron Stinnie earned spots on the AFCA Football Championship Subdivision Coaches' All-America Teams.
Ankrah and Robinson were both voted First Team All-Americans, and Stinnie was a Second Team All-America honoree.
For Ankrah, it is his fourth First Team All-America award of 2017. Robinson has now earned three All-America accolades, having also been an Associated Press Second Team All-American and a Third Team member from STATS. Stinnie also has three All-America award, adding on to his First Team honors from both the AP and STATS.
A top-three finalist for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award, Ankrah was voted Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and Touchdown Club of Richmond Division I Defensive Lineman of the Year after helping JMU to one of its best defensive seasons on record. This season, he has tallied 54 total tackles (29 solo), to go with 15.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown. He currently ranks fourth all-time at JMU with 26.0 career sacks.
Robinson is one of the nation's leaders in the secondary, hauling in seven interceptions, which ranks third nationally. He's also provided 49 total tackles (36 solo), to go with 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, eight pass breakups for a total of 15 passes defended and one defensive score. After nearly returning an interception for a touchdown at William & Mary, he had a pick-six against New Hampshire on Homecoming. Robinson also tallied a career-high two picks in JMU's win at FBS-foe ECU.
Stinnie was named Touchdown Club of Richmond Division I Offensive Lineman of the Year after starting every game at left tackle. He helped lead the Dukes to a fourth straight season with high offensive numbers. The Dukes lead the CAA and rank eighth nationally in scoring (35.9). They also pace the conference in completion percentage (66.5%) and rushing (201.5), which ranks fourth and 19th in the FCS, respectively. JMU also ranks 12th in first downs (22.1), 18th in pass efficiency (148.13 rating) and 21st in total offense (431.7).
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. These All-Americans are chosen exclusively by the coaches themselves. This year's team is made up of 31 seniors, 13 juniors, three sophomores, two freshmen and a graduate student.
Jacksonville State led all teams with an AFCA-record four All-America selections. JMU was one of five teams to land three AFCA All-Americans, being joined by Sam Houston State, Samford, South Dakota State and Weber State. The CAA had five total honorees, with four being named to the First Team.
The top-seeded Dukes return to the gridiron on Saturday, Jan. 6 when they face No. 2 North Dakota State in the NCAA Division I Football Championship game. Kickoff is set for noon ET (11 a.m. CT) from Toyota Stadium and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
