HARRISONBURG, Va. – After coming up just short in last Saturday's championship game, James Madison ended the 2017 season ranked No. 2 in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and the FCS Coaches Poll.
The Dukes did receive one first-place vote in the FCS Coaches Poll.
JMU finished the season ranking the top 10 nationally in 18 categories, which included leading the Football Championship Subdivision in scoring defense (11.1), interceptions (31), takeaways (44) and pass efficiency defense (83.12).
The Dukes also ranked third in total defense (252.0), turnover margin (+1.47), defensive touchdowns (5) and first downs (325), fourth in punt-return defense (3.33), fifth in sacks (3.4), seventh in rush defense (90.5), eighth in fumble recoveries (13), ninth in both completion percentage (64.9%) and net punting (38.77) and 10th in passing defense (161.5), third-down defense (30.1%), punt-return average (13.0) and blocked punts (2).
JMU tied its program record for wins, ended the year at 14-1. The Dukes won their third straight Colonial Athletic Association championship, including a second straight outright crown. JMU advanced to the FCS playoffs for a program-record fourth straight year and second straight national championship game. JMU built a 26-game win streak, which ranked second all-time in the history of the FCS.
The Dukes were one of four CAA schools to end 2017 ranked. Joining them were Stony Brook (#11/11), New Hampshire (#12/15) and Elon (#20/21).
North Dakota State was ranked No. 1 in both polls. Following JMU in the STATS media poll were South Dakota State, Sam Houston State and Weber State. On the coaches' side, SHSU was third, followed by SDSU and Weber State.
