CHICAGO, Ill. – James Madison redshirt sophomore safety D'Angelo Amos earned his first career national award, as he was named STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week.
Amos, who garnered Colonial Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Week honors earlier Monday, tied three school records while setting one conference record in JMU's 37-0 win at Villanova last Saturday.
He returned three punts for a CAA-record 183 yards and two touchdowns. He scored both of his touchdowns in a span of just 2:10 of the third quarter.
His first touchdown came on an 89-yard return, which tied the school record for longest punt return. After a defensive stop, Amos found the end zone on an 81-yard return. He's the second player in JMU history to return two punts for a touchdown in the same game, joining Gary Clark, who did so in 1983 at Virginia. His 183 punt-return yards also matched Clark's total from that game 35 years ago.
Through seven games, Amos leads the FCS with three punt returns for a touchdown and a 30.1 punt return average.
This is JMU's first national player of the week honor of the season and the first since Vad Lee was named STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28, 2015.
Amos and the fourth-ranked Dukes are on a bye this weekend and return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27 when it hosts No. 18 Stony Brook for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field.
