First Half Surge Propels Dukes Past Cougars

HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison men's soccer picked up its sixth win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the College of Charleston in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday night at Sentara Park. The Dukes improve to 6-3-2 overall and 4-1 in the CAA while the Cougars fall to 3-7-2 and 0-3-1.
With the victory, JMU earns three points and continues to lead the CAA with 12 points. UNCW and Hofstra follow in the standings with 10 points apiece.
HOW THEY SCORED
1'| 12 seconds into the match, redshirt senior Billy Metzler notched his third goal of the season from 24 yards as the ball rolled off the keeper's hands. Senior Aaron Ward-Baptiste deflected the ball, feeding Metzler for the goal.
27' | Junior Manuel Ferriol breaks the Cougars' last line of defense with a chipped through ball, finding Ward-Baptiste who beats the goalkeeper with a header into the right corner.
65' | Sophomore Peik Koskinen collects a through ball and looks up to find Ferriol who scores with a one touch finish from six yards out.
69' | Joao de Souza scored the lone goal for the Cougars on a penalty kick into the right corner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
For the eighth match this season, JMU outshot its opponent, taking 14 shots to Charleston's seven. Seven of the Dukes' shots were on goal, forcing Cameron Smith to make four saves in the net. Redshirt sophomore TJ Bush tallied one save, improving his season total to 31.

"It was not our best performance tonight, but we found a way to win which is good. The key to the game for us was scoring early. It's important to get every point you can in our conference, because everyone is a quality team. The Dukes travel to Williamsburg to take on in-state foe William & Mary on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be available to watch on Tribe Athletics TV.
