JMU Falls to Liberty, 4-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday, as it dropped a 4-1 decision to Liberty in non-conference baseball action at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

The Flames (4-0) scored the first run of the game in the third inning as junior D.J. Artis crossed the plate off a ground ball to second. Liberty added a run in the fifth inning off a single to centerfield that scored freshman Will Wagner.

The Dukes (3-1) plated their sole run off a solo shot from senior Zach Tondi over the right-centerfield wall in the seventh inning. Tondi finished the game going 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and a RBI.

Liberty tacked on the final two runs of the game off a two-run homer by junior Tre Todd.

On the mound, sophomore Kevin Kelly (0-1) received the start and threw three inning tallying five strikeouts only giving up one walk, three hits and an earned run. Â

Freshman Conor Hartigan posted his second multi-hit game this season, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles.

"I was proud of the way our guys fought today. Zach Tondi's home run gave us some energy late in the game which was good. Now we have to learn from this loss, continue to compete and challenge ourselves to be better each day and get ready for our home-opener this weekend."

JMU will open their home slate with a weekend series against Albany on Feb. 23-25. The first game is set for a 3 p.m. start on Friday at Eagle field at Veterans Memorial Park. Friday's game will be the season-opener for Albany.
