HARRISONBURG, Va. – Head Coach Mike Houstonannounced three role changes on the James Madison football coaching staff ahead of the upcoming 2018 season.
Fontel Mines has been named the program's recruiting coordinator, and Steve Shankweilerand Jeff Hanson have each been named run-game coordinators for their respective sides of the ball.
Mines has been at JMU for one season where his inside receivers group combined for over 70 catches and nearly 800 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2017.
"Fontel is a bright and talented young coach who is extremely hard-working and capable to fulfill this role within our football program," Houston said. "He held this position previously at Delaware, and I'm extremely excited about him taking control of our recruiting and enhancing our recruiting efforts as we target the top recruits in the region."
Shankweiler will enter his first season with the team in 2018 as the offensive line coach, and he brings more than four decades of experience, including 35 at the Division I level. Of the 35 years, 20 were spent as an offensive coordinator.
"Steve's knowledge and experience as an offensive coordinator at the highest levels will be a tremendous asset to our entire offense," Houston said. "Paired up with offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick, we feel like we will be able to keep our offense functioning as one of the best in the country. We're excited about his new role as our offensive line coach and run-game coordinator."
Hanson, who is in his second stint with the program, will enter this third season with the program this coming season. Over the past two seasons, he coached three different players to all-conference status, including Andrew Ankrah, who was the 2017 FCS ADA Defensive Player of the Year and second runner-up for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award.
"Over the past couple years, I've come to respect Jeff as one of the very best coaches I've been around," Houston said. "With his role as defensive run-game coordinator, along with the leadership of defensive coordinator Bob Trott, I believe our defense will continue to be one the top units in the country. I'm going to lean on Coach Hanson's experience to keep our staff on the same page when it comes to playing the way we want to play."
