NORTHBROOK, Ill. – James Madison senior safety Grant Westbrook has been recognized as a nominee for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, the American Football Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Westbrook works with Big Brothers Big Sisters, serving as a Big for a seven-year old elementary student in the Harrisonburg area. The Leesburg, Va., native has been heavily involved in Relay for Life through his pre-professional fraternity, Phi Epsilon Kappa. Westbrook also visits local soup kitchens, has partaken in the annual Bone Marrow Drive and makes frequent visits to elementary schools for class visits, field days and anti-bullying events.
He holds over a 3.0 grade-point average majoring in kinesiology and made the President's List in each of the past two semesters at JMU. On the field, Westbrook has appeared in 36 games for the Dukes as a safety and on special teams.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has been one of the most esteemed honors in college football for more than 25 years. The student-athletes who are nominated for this award not only demonstrate a unique dedication to community service and desire to make a positive impact on the lives around them, but they also show tremendous perseverance as well as the ability to overcome personal struggles and come out victorious against all odds.
The team is comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and one honorary head coach. To be in consideration by Allstate and the AFCA for a nomination, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
Westbrook was one of two Colonial Athletic Association Football athletes to be recognized, as he was joined by Stony Brook's Marc Nolan. A total of 169 student-athletes were named a nominee for the award, including 99 from the FCS, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA and 70 more from the FBS level.
The final roster of 22 award recipients and honorary head coach will be unveiled in September.
