CHICAGO, Ill. – James Madison senior cornerback Rashad Robinson was one of 25 players named to the preseason watch list for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award, which recognizes the best defensive player annually in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Â
Robinson was voted the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and has received Preseason All-America First Team honors from Athlon Sports, STATS and HERO Sports ahead of the 2018 season.
Â
The Richmond, Va., native was one of the leading corners in the CAA as a junior in 2017, registering 51 total tackles (38 solo), to go with 2.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, seven interceptions, one pick-six and nine breakups. His interception total ranked third both nationally and in the CAA.
Â
The First Team All-CAA selection earned All-America accolades from four organizations, including First Team honors from the AFCA.
Â
He was one of four CAA student-athletes to earn the preseason nod for the Buchanan Award, as he was joined by Delaware's Nasir Adderley, Richmond's Andrew Clyde and Elon's Warren Messer.
Â
Last year, Andrew Ankrah finished third in the voting for the Buchanan, and the Dukes have had two previous winners. Derrick Lloyd was the program's first winner in 2001 and Arthur Moats claimed the laurel in 2009.
Â
Robinson and the Dukes begin preseason camp on Friday, Aug. 3, leading up to the season opener on Saturday, Sept. 1 at NC State. The 2018 season is presented by CarMax and tickets are on sale now at JMUTickets.com.
