CHARLESTON, S.C. – James Madison graduate running back Cardon Johnson has been named to the preseason watch list for the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year trophy, the College Football Performance Awards announced Monday.
The list includes 36 returning players in the Football Championship Subdivision, and 2018 marks the fourth consecutive season that Johnson made the list either during the preseason or during the regular season.
The Newport News, Va., native was granted a medical hardship waiver and a sixth season of eligibility from the NCAA after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in the third game last season.
In three starts last year, Johnson rushed for 347 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 9.4 yards per carry. In the 2017 season opener, he ran for a career-high 265 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries (15.6 avg.), leading JMU to a win over FBS foe East Carolina. That performance included touchdown runs of a 85 (career long) and 80 yards.
In 24 career outings, Johnson has rushed for 2,088 yards, which ranks 15th all-time at JMU. He has scored 21 rushing touchdowns and holds a career 6.7 yards per carry.
The Dukes have produced one previous winner of the award, as quarterback Bryan Schor was the 2016 recipient of the CFPA's top honor. Johnson was one of four Colonial Athletic Association athletes recognized on the 2018 preseason list and the only non-quarterback, as he was joined by Elon's Davis Cheek, New Hampshire's Trevor Knight and Stony Brook's Joe Carbone.
The 2018 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award, which will be announced January 9, 2019.
