JMU Dominates Doubleheader, Pushes Win Streak to Four

HARRISONBURG, Va -- James Madison men's tennis completed a doubleheader sweep of Washington & Lee and Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon to push its dual-match win streak to four games.

Recent Colonial Athletic Association Doubles Team of the Week Paul Mendoza and Tate Steinour opened up doubles play with 6-2 win. The juniors still have yet to yield a set in doubles play on the dual season. Sophomore Gonzalo Adis and junior Josh Raymundo clinched the doubles point a few minutes later, also with a 6-2 scoreline.

With the doubles point in hand, Mendoza and junior Damon Roberts were the first two off the court to push the Dukes lead to 3-0. Mendoza secured a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Roberts a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 slot. The clinch came in tougher fashion, as sophomore Alvaro Arce dropped his first set of the dual season in the opening set against the Generals' Harry Shepherd. But after the 6-2 first set loss, the sophomore only dropped four games en route to a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.

With the match clinched 4-0, freshman William Karpinski and Raymundo both earned victories; Karpinski rolling 6-0, 6-3 and Raymundo cruising 6-1, 6-2.

Will and Josh practiced with high intensity all week. It's no surprise that they performed so well in the matches today. Both always looking for opportunities to come to the net and finish off the points. Josh served great today and did an excellent job of mixing it up and keeping the returners guessing all day.

After clinching the doubles point with three victories, the Dukes got to dominating, as they didn't drop a set to Mount St. Mary's in a 7-0 victory.

Roberts had the most grueling match against the Mountaineers, as he pulled through in a 7-5, 6-4 win against Alonso Garcia. His win clinched the match, as he followed Mendoza's 6-2, 6-1 triumph and Adis's 6-2, 6-0 rolling.

But the stellar play wouldn't end with the match decided, as both freshman Eugene Clur and William Karpinski both earned straight set wins. Karpinski's second bagel of the day came in a 6-0, 6-2 win and Clur came away with a win at the No. 5 slot, 6-4, 6-2.

Raymundo concluded an outstanding day with a 6-0, 6-1 obliteration of Christian Duran. The junior was 4-0 on the day in singles and doubles combined.

"I collected myself on every service game knowing once I held early in the matches, I could relax and put together a couple good return games. As the matches progressed I was able to build up confidence and play the game I'm capable of," Raymundo said. "It felt good to get a start and show the coaches and everyone what I'm capable of."

Always happy to get a win -- let alone two wins in a day. Washington & Lee was tough; that's why its one of the best Division III schools there is. The second match was good just to let some of the guys know that they can play two matches in a day. I'm pleased. Everybody has little things here or there that they need to edge up as always. Playing Virginia Tech on Friday will be the opposite of these two matches: We'll be the underdog in that one, but it's very close. We'll have a good week of practice and head down there and see what we can do!
