NASHVILLE, Tenn. – All-American cornerback
Jimmy Moreland became the first James Madison football player in six years to be drafted, as he was taken by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round and 227th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Â
Moreland completed his JMU career as a Consensus First Team All-American during his senior year in 2018. The Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year led the conference with five interceptions and paced the Football Championship Subdivision with three interceptions for a touchdown.
Â
The First Team All-CAA selection out of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., was also selected as a Touchdown Club of Richmond Bill Dudley Award finalist and named State Defensive Player of the Year by both VaSID and the
Roanoke Times.
Â
Moreland is JMU's all-time leader with 18 career interceptions and recorded a program- and CAA-record six pick-sixes. Moreland tallied a JMU single-season record 217 interception return yards and also ranked in the top 10 nationally with 15 passes defended this past fall.
Â
In 13 starts at corner, he registered 56 total tackles to go with 7.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one recovery, 10 pass breakups and a blocked punt. Moreland finished just one interception and one pick-six shy of the FCS career record.
Â
Following the season, Moreland was invited to play the East-West Shrine Bowl and became JMU's first invitee to the Reese's Senior Bowl.
Â
Moreland is JMU's first NFL Draft selection since 2013 when former offensive lineman Earl Watford was taken in the fourth round by the Arizona Cardinals. He's also the second JMU cornerback to ever be taken in the Draft, joining 2010 sixth-round selection Scotty McGee.
Â
To date, 10 former JMU stars are currently on active NFL rosters, including six from the 2016 national-championship team.
