HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison women's tennis returned to the East Campus Tennis Courts Sunday in victorious fashion, taking down George Washington 4-0 to earn its fifth straight dual-match win.
Sunday's victory improved the Dukes' record to 7-2, while the Colonials fell to 3-5.
JMU won two of three doubles matches and all three singles matches that went the distance. One other match went unfinished and singles matches at the #5 and #6 spots never began once the Dukes clinched the win.
The sophomore tandem of Amanda Nord and Kylie Moulin beat Jiaqing Mo and Alexandra Vesikallio 6-0 at #3 doubles for the early advantage. Senior Jona Roka and sophomore Daria Afanasyeva clinched the doubles point for with a 6-2 win over Luciana Kunkel and Sarah Bodewes at #2 doubles.
Nord and Moulin's victory marked their fifth straight in doubles, while Roka and Afanasyeva are on a four-match win streak after Sunday's match.
Leading 1-0 going into singles play, Afanasyeva captured the first singles point for the Dukes with her straight-set win over Alexandra Vesikallio, 6-1, 6-0 at the #2 spot. Moulin rolled in straight sets at #3 singles, beating Melis Bayraktaroglu 7-5, 6-2 to make it a 3-0 lead. Roka clinched the match at #1 singles, taking a 6-3, 6-4 decision from Katarina Marinkovikj.
With the match clinched, the singles match on court four was stopped, and matches on courts five and six did not begin.
UP NEXT
The Dukes will face Cornell on Monday, Feb. 24 at the East Campus Tennis Courts. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
