HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison men's golf has announced that, as part of the NCAA's spring sport eligibility relief, team captain
Walker Cress will return for the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
Prior to the 2019-20 season ending prematurely, the Dukes were on their way to the strongest season in program history, picking up three team victories in just eight tournaments, while notching both the lowest scoring average (285.46, -2.04) and highest national ranking (No. 58) ever posted at the conclusion of a year.
Â
"Walker is our captain and has been one of our leaders, both on and off the course, for a long time now," Head Coach
Jeff Forbes said. "We're very excited that he'll be able to end his career on his terms and we're thankful to be in a position to provide him that opportunity."
Â
Cress helped lead the way in the Dukes' record-setting season, playing in the starting lineup at all eight tournaments and posting a 72.29 scoring average, third-lowest on the team, adding his first collegiate victory with medalist honors at the River Run Collegiate.
Â
All told, his 2019-20 effort saw him lower his career scoring average to 73.23 (+1.51), the sixth-lowest in program history.
Â
The Dukes added both
Sigurður "Siggi" Blumenstein of Iceland and
Alexandre D'Aurelle de Paladines of France in November's early signing period, and will now return all six players that saw significant tournament action in 2019-20.
