Ron'Dell Carter Signs with Indianapolis Colts, Activated to 53-Man Roster

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Former James Madison All-American Ron'Dell Carter signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday, being immediately activated to the franchise's 53-man roster for week four of the NFL season.

Carter was claimed by Indianapolis from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, where he spent the first three weeks of the regular season. He originally signed with Dallas immediately following the NFL Draft last April.

The Baltimore native spent three years at JMU (2017-19), becoming one of the program's best pass rushers in school history. He finished his career ranked ninth all-time with 23.5 sacks. As a senior in 2019, he was a Consensus FCS First Team All-American and runner-up for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award.

Carter, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, tallied 66 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries last year. He ranked seventh in Division I in tackles for loss and 21st in sacks. His sack total in 2019 was also tied for third in JMU single-season history.

With Carter's signing to Indianapolis, eight of JMU's FCS-leading nine professional players are currently assigned to their team's 53-man rosters.

He and the Colts (2-1) hit the road to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m.
