GREEN BAY, Wis. – Former James Madison All-Americans Aaron Stinnie ('17) and Josh Wells ('13) will play for the National Football League's biggest prize, as the duo advanced to Super Bowl LV following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 31-26 win at the Green Bay Packers in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
It's the first Super Bowl appearance for both Stinnie and Wells, as Tampa also becomes the first team in NFL history to play for the Lombardi Trophy in its home stadium.
Stinnie has come in to start in each of the past two weeks at right guard for the Buccaneers, while Wells appeared in all but one game during the regular season and in all three playoff wins.
With their win on Sunday, Tampa Bay became the fifth team in playoff history to win three road games en route to a Super Bowl berth, joining the 1985 New England Patriots, the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2007 New York Giants and the 2010 Green bay Packers.
The Bucs opened the postseason with a 31-23 win at the Washington Football Team on Super Wild Card Weekend. Last week, they downed the New Orleans Saints, 30-20, avenging a pair of regular-season setbacks. Sunday's conference championship win marked its second win this year against Green Bay, as it also won 38-10 at home in week six.
Both Stinnie and Wells are in their second season with the Buccaneers. Wells is the veteran of JMU's professional Dukes, as he's in his seventh year in the NFL. Stinnie, who was picked up mid-season by Tampa in 2019, is in his third season in the NFL.
Super Bowl LV emanates from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 7. Kickoff between the Bucs and AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs is set for 6:30 p.m. on CBS.
