RICHMOND, Va. - After setting a career high in blocks on Saturday and leading the team in total blocks for the weekend, freshman
Annie Smith was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday.
Â
Smith's 2.33 blocks per set led the Dukes, who swept William & Mary twice over the weekend. Her nine blocks on Saturday set a career high, and she added five more on Sunday, including a solo block to finish the match. Â
Smith earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. Junior and fellow middle blocker
Sophia Davis received the award twice in September. Smith is the second freshman to get CAA recognition this season, joining
Jaydyn Clemmer who won Rookie of the Week on Sept. 27.
Â
The Jupiter, Fla. native has 41.0 total blocks on the season, third most for James Madison. She has 37 kills on a .261 hitting percentage in 34 sets played for the Dukes this season.
Â
James Madison is 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the CAA, tied with Elon for first place in the loss column. The Dukes travel to UNCW for a pair of road matches on Oct. 23 and 24, with both matches streamed on FloSports.
