HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne has announced a contract extension for field hockey Head Coach Christy Morgan, the terms of which will keep Morgan under contract with the Dukes through January 2026.
"Christy proved in 2021 why she's a Hall of Fame coach at JMU," Bourne said. "The program has been fighting hard for a few years to get back to the top of the CAA. It's incredible not only that they were able to achieve that with a regular season championship, but they did it while also having to overcome all of the challenges of such a unique year. The fact that they have continued that success this fall further exemplifies the program's positive momentum. We are excited about the future for this team with Christy Morgan at the helm."
Since her return to JMU in 2014, Morgan has led the Dukes to the Colonial Athletics Association tournament every year, with three championship game appearances. Her record throughout her entire career at JMU is 214-124-2.
In the current 2021 season, the Dukes have a 10-6 record with a total of six shutouts. JMU currently sits at 5-0 in CAA play, having captured its second straight regular season championship after a 6-1 win against Drexel on Friday.
"I am really excited about the extension because there is a lot of work to be done here and I think we started the work," Morgan said. "We're doing well this year, we have a great recruiting class and I want to be here to guide them to not just a CAA championship, but even bigger than that, a national championship at some point. I am happy that the administration believes in me. I believe in JMU and I bleed purple. I believe in JMU hockey and I believe we can be the best."
Morgan first took over as head coach of the Dukes in 1991 and three seasons later led JMU to its first-ever national championship in any sport, defeating top-ranked North Carolina. She led JMU to five NCAA tournament appearances (1993-95, '97, '99) and also led the team to a 1995 CAA championship over Old Dominion.
She returned to JMU in 2014 after leaving in 1999 and has had an immediate impact, leading the Dukes to their first-ever CAA championship game since 2008. In the 2020 season, which was postponed to Spring 2021 due to COVID 19, she led JMU to a perfect 5-0 record play in conference play, which helped her earn her fourth CAA Coach of the Year honor.
The Dukes are preparing to take on William & Mary this weekend ahead of the CAA Championships.
