Marcus Marshall is a former JMU running back who decided after his senior season he was going to leave JMU early to go train in Florida for the NFL draft. Marcus ended up getting picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs on contract. After the 2019 season ended, he went back home to Georgia to continue to train. He was in luck that the Tennessee Titans called him up to be on practice squad for the upcoming 2020 season.
Marcus realized that his NFL career wasn't going to be his forever future, so he decided to continue his education in Georgia and get his degree in Business management. Marcus graduated in December 2020 with a bachelor's in Science. After graduating he reached back out to Dukes LEAD because of his experience being a student-athlete at JMU. He realized that Dukes LEAD could guide him in the right direction to find a job.
Dukes LEAD has built a partnership with Athletes to Careers. Athletes to Careers is a nonprofit organization that helps forum athletes get placed into a profession they want to pursue. Athletes to Careers has built partnerships with corporate businesses that are looking to hire former student-athletes. Mike Townsend, Vice President of Mid-Atlantic Region at Athletes to Careers helped Marcus Marshall get placed with a company in Raleigh, NC. The process that Marcus went through was a 2–3-hour coaching session with Mike. The coaching session is an introduction session to the program, going over career guide, and filling out career development questionnaire. This session allows for Mike to get a better understanding of what skills Marcus has to set up interviews for him.
Mike helped Marcus prepare for interviews, coach him through the process and help him land a job with Varonis. Marcus started his job in January as a Territory Development Representative where he will be reaching out to clients to see if they want to demo their product. He hopes this position will allow for him to grow professionally, get hands on experience and explore the corporate business world.
All in all, Marcus realized that Dukes LEAD will always be here for him even after he left JMU. Athletes to Careers was designed to help former student-athletes with the transition from being an athlete to the professional world. They are here to be the student-athletes career coach for life.
