EDMONTON, Alberta – Two-time All-American
Andrew Ankrah of the James Madison football team is headed north of the border, as he's signed a professional contract with the Edmonton Football Team of the Canadian Football League, the franchise announced on Thursday.
Ankrah played for the Dukes from 2013-17 and was one of the nation's top defenders in his senior season, as he won the FCS Athletics Directors Association Defensive Player of the Year award and was second runner-up for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award.
A 2017 Consensus First Team All-American, he finished his career with 177 total tackles, to go with 36.0 tackles for loss, 26.0 sacks, eight forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He still ranks fifth all-time at JMU in career sacks. He was a three-time First Team All-CAA honoree and additionally earned All-America status in 2015.
Ankrah has prior professional experience in the XFL, NFL and Alliance of American Football. He most recently played for the XFL's St. Louis BattleHawks in 2020. Ankrah also was part of the Washington Redskins' training camp roster in 2019 and was a starter for the AAF's Orlando Apollos in the lone season of that league.
He becomes the second former JMU player to ink a CFL contract for this upcoming season, joining
Dimitri Holloway, who signed with the Ottawa REDBLACKS back in December.
EE Football Team opens the 2021 CFL season on June 12 at home against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
