CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – James Madison was unable to find a consistent offensive rhythm against #14 Virginia and fell, 5-2 in non-conference field hockey action at Turf Field on Sunday.

With the loss, JMU moved to 1-1 on the season while the Cavaliers improve to 5-9. Virginia controlled the momentum for majority of the game as it outshot the Dukes 15-9 including holding an 11-3 shot margin at halftime.

The Dukes racked up five corners to Virginia's four. Freshman Brandelynn Heinbaugh (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season but secured three saves en route to five saves as a team. Joining Heinbaugh defensively was classmate Sarah Beers who secured two defensive saves.

Sophomores Caroline Cahill and Emily Harrison each scored their first goal of the year while senior Rachel Yeager recorded her second assist of the season.

Virginia broke to 0-0 tie with their seventh shot of the first quarter on a wide-open net. The Cavaliers doubled their lead off a penalty stroke in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead at half. Despite JMU opening the second half with three quick shots, Virginia earned two corners in the third, scoring on both to hold a 4-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The Dukes began the fourth with the same sense of emergency in the third earning a corner within a minute of action. Cahill dribbled the ball around before finding the back of the net. Within two minutes of JMU's first goal, Yeager sent in a nice cross to Harrison who tapped the ball in net to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

With time winding down, JMU sent a full attack that resulted in a breakaway goal for Virginia that led to the final score, 5-2.

"We had moments of greatness but not enough of them," head coach Christy Morgan said. "Some great lessons came out of today so we will learn from it and next time we will end up with a win!"
