RICHMOND, Va. – James Madison swept the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis honors following a conference road sweep, as
Daria Afanasyeva was named Player of the Week and Afanasyeva and
Alexis Franco were tabbed Doubles Team of the Week.
This is Afanasyeva's second CAA Player of the Week honor this season and the fourth of her career. Franco earned Doubles Team of the Week for the second time this season and for the first time with Afanasyeva.
JMU is fresh off a pair of CAA wins at UNCW (7-0) and at Elon (6-1), improving to 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in conference matches.
Afanasyeva went 2-0 at the #1 singles spot, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against UNCW's Celeste Matute, which clinched the fourth point and match win for JMU. She followed that up with a come-from-behind win vs. Elon's Victoria Saldh, rallying for a 6-7(4), 6-2, 1-0(7) triumph.
In doubles play, Afanasyeva and Franco won both matches at the #1 position to aid in JMU's two wins.
The duo downed UNCW's Maddy Muller-Hughes and Anna Parker-Shumate, 7-5, to complete the doubles sweep on Friday, and followed it up with a 6-3 triumph against Elon's Sibel Tanik and Olivia Archer on Saturday.
In addition to Afanasyeva's pair of singles wins, Franco also went 2-0 at the #5 singles slot, with victories against UNCW's Zoe Huffman (6-1, 6-2) and Elon's Sofia Edo (7-5, 6-1).
JMU is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. with a road match at #47 Charlotte.
