JMU Drops Tough Match Against Delaware

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis battled tough against conference foe Delaware but dropped the final matches to fall 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Hillside Courts.

The Dukes fell to 5-6 overall, while the Blue Hens improved to 4-2.

After dropping the first doubles match on court three, JMU evened the score with a victory on court one. Redshirt freshman Holden Koons and redshirt senior Paul Mendoza took care of business, beating Pierce Gilheany and Pierre-Louis Dodens, 6-2.

The doubles point came down to court two. After falling behind 5-2, redshirt juniors Alvaro Arce and Gonzalo Adis came back to take the lead, 6-5 over James Wilkinson and Liam Hedlund, but UD came out on top in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6) to take the 1-0 lead.

Transitioning to singles play, Koons evened the score with a dominant performance on court one, beating Wilkinson 6-0, 6-1. Koons improved to 8-3 in singles matches this season.

After Delaware took the lead with a win on court six, Mendoza tied it again for the Dukes, downing Gilheany in straight sets on court four by scores of 7-6 (1), 6-4.

The match would come down to a trio of three-setters on courts two, three and five. Delaware escaped with wins on all three to come away with the 5-2 victory.

The Dukes will finish out their home regular-season slate as they take on the College of Charleston on Saturday, April 17. The Senior Day match will begin at 11 a.m. at Hillside Courts.
