5/15/2021 9:14:00 PM | Baseball
The Dukes took game one, 10-7, before falling 7-4 in game two. JMU moves to 10-15, 5-9 CAA while the Tribe is now 13-26, 10-13 CAA.
Game One
JMU wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, as the first five batters all reached base. After a leadoff double from Chase DeLauter and then a single from Conor Hartigan, Kyle Novak took a pitch over the right center wall to give the Dukes an early 3-0 lead. Travis Reifsnider then singled and advanced to third on a Michael Morgan single, before scoring on Carson Bell's sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Dukes then pushed their lead to seven the next inning, leading off with three consecutive doubles from Nick Zona, DeLauter, and Hartigan and then a single by Novak to make it 7-0. The Tribe did not go down quietly, as they scored their first run in the fourth on an RBI single. They then scored four in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 7-6 heading into the seventh.
The Dukes scored twice in the seventh on a triple and a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 9-6, but William & Mary scored once more with a double in the eighth to cut the lead back to two runs. The Dukes scored again in the eighth, this time on a leadoff home run from DeLauter for a career-high fourth hit to take the game 10-7. Lliam Grubbs went 2.1 innings to pick up the win and DeLauter led the Dukes going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI's, two doubles, and a home run.
Game Two
The Tribe opened up the scoring in the second game, scoring five runs in the first four innings to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. The Dukes began to cut at the lead in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Bell and Mason Dunaway making it 5-1.
The Dukes then scored twice in the fifth to make it 5-3. After the first two batters got out, Hartigan singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on an error by the first baseman attempting to throw him out. Novak then walked and was followed by Travis Reifsnider hitting a double off the left field wall to score Hartigan. Morgan then singled to third base to score Reifsnider.
William & Mary then pushed their lead to 7-3 in the seventh on a balk and a single. The Dukes did not go quiet in the ninth; however, as Novak and Reifsnider drew leadoff walks to bring the tying run in the on-deck circle. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Bell hit a sacrifice fly to center to score one and make it 7-4. That would be all the Dukes would be able to manage though, falling by that score. Hartigan led the Dukes in the second game by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
