WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Five Dukes earned Virginia Sports Information Directors University Volleyball All-State honors, as the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year
Miëtte Veldman and Coach of the Year
Lauren Steinbrecher headlined the major awards, the organization announced on Friday morning.
Steinbrecher was named VaSID Coach of the Year and Veldman earned a Rookie of the Year nod. This is the second season in a row that JMU has claimed the Rookie of the Year award. In addition to the major award, Veldman earned All-State First Team honors and was joined by teammate
Sophia Davis on the list.
Savannah Marshall and
Elizabeth Helmich earned All-State Second Team honors.
Steinbrecher earned the Coach of the Year accolade for the second time in her career, after guiding the Dukes to a record of 7-2, 6-1 in conference matches to earn the No. 1 seed in the CAA South Division, leading JMU to its seventh consecutive CAA semifinal appearance. She coached a young team to a .216 hitting percentage averaging 12.38 kills per set, while ranking second in the CAA for blocks per set and 15
th in the nation with 2.64 blocks per set.
After her remarkable freshman campaign, Veldman added VaSID Rookie of the Year honors to her resume. She finished the regular season leading freshmen in kills per set with 4.26 in 35 sets hitting on a .270 clip, while sitting second in the conference and 33
rd in the nation. She sits fourth in the CAA for points per set racking up 158.5 points to average 4.53. Defensively, the freshman recorded 85 digs averaging 2.43 a set and seven total blocks.

Over the course of 9 games, she recorded five double-doubles between kills and digs while posting a season-high of 25 kills against UNCW. Veldman earned three weekly honors this season, CAA Rookie of the Week (3/1, 3/22) and Offensive Player of the Week (3/29).

Davis earns a First Team nod for the second consecutive year after a strong sophomore season. The middle blocker racked up 97 kills with a .294 hitting percentage, while contributing 133.5 points averaging 3.42 a set.
At the net, Davis ranks second in CAA for blocks tallying 56.0 total with 15 being solo blocks and is second for blocks per set averaging 1.54 – 15th in the nation. The sophomore earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting 17 blocks, averaging 2.13 a set, in the series against College of Charleston.
Marshall earned her first VaSID All-State honor after leading the Dukes with 174 digs to average 4.97 a set, ranking her third in the conference. The junior recorded five matches with 20-plus digs including posting a career-high of 28 digs against Elon. Offensively, Marshall recorded 10 service aces and 34 assists.
Helmich earned Second Team honors had a strong freshman campaign racking up 68 kills, two assists and 11 service aces. She recorded a season-high three service aces against College of Charleston. She posted a season-high 12 kills against UNCW and Elon. Defensively, the freshman racked up 27.0 total blocks, four solos, to average .77 a set.
